The Tygerberg Technikon Dojo was originally started by a group of students of the Tygerberg Technikon in 1980.  One of the co-founders’ members was Sensei Pieter Esterhuizen, 5th Dan, now head of the Caledon Dojo in the Overberg.

Sensei Mary-Ann Landers took over instruction in 1983 and because of the relocation of the training venue to nearby Parow North changed the name of the dojo to the Neko Karate Dojo.  In 2026, the dojo celebrated 43 years (1983 – 2026) of karate training in the Tygerberg area and continues to cater for both junior and senior members, who wish to train in the Shotokan Karate way.

The dojo has 4 gradings scheduled per year and all members are well prepared to attempt their next karate level for which they can also be in line for various floating trophies.  The members are also encouraged and prepared to participate in various competitions at either club, regional, provincial or national levels.

Self-defence and groundwork also play an important part of the training, as well as fitness, stamina and stretching.  The dojo hosts the annual summer beach training (gasshuku) at the end of January each year, where all the members train on the beach and in the ocean at Big Bay, Blouberg.

Today many of our children do not take the time to do sometime physical as they would rather be occupied with the latest gaming product, which may improve hand and eye co-ordination as well as keep them quiet for hours.  Karate will develop the child both physically and mentally as the active child will have to use both physical and mental skills to perform the various techniques required.

Bullying is another factor in our society and a child who is training karate will learn to defend himself/herself and also aid those who are unable to protect themselves.

Self-esteem will also improve as the child’s skills improve with regular karate training.

Recently a number of parents have started to train with their children in this class as they have decided to take part instead of sitting on the sides watching the class.

This venue is a large multi-disciplined venue which is registered with the Jan Burger Sports Facility Management Committee and has a novilon tiled floor and toilet facilities.  It is very spacious and ideal for the junior classes.  The instructors utilise various pieces of equipment to compliment the karate training, i.e. focus pads, kicking pads, beacons, field markers, floor ladders, belts and chairs.

Stress is a factor which affects us all whether unemployed, employed or self-employed.  Karate is an excellent stress reliever in that one gets to exercise regularly.

With regular exercise, comes weight loss which is also another issue that is important to all.

This venue is a ballet school which has a sprung wooden floor and toilet facilities.  Full length mirrors on the front side of the training venue offering a ready reference point for improvement of technique and ballet bars for stretching and balancing down the length of the back wall.  The instructors utilise various pieces of equipment to compliment the karate training, i.e. focus pads, kicking pads, beacons, field markers, floor ladders, belts and chairs.
